Sheffield Wednesday’s winless run in the Championship extended to five games after they drew 1-1 with Birmingham City on Wednesday. Some players came away with praise from supporters despite the result, but the majority underperformed on the night and were criticised on social media.
Barry Bannan was one of many to be slated by fans, and he may find his place in the side being up for grabs if things don’t improve. The 29-year-old saw a lot of the ball but was wasteful in possession and didn’t provide much defensive protection over the 90 minutes.
Thought bannan was ineffective again last night in the position he was in. Can’t play luongo, Lee and bannan in the same team. Bannan is NOT a CDM and passing to a team mate 5 yards away and putting them under pressure is NOT good. Has to be 2 of the 3 with someone sitting #swfc

Oh and bannan cant make that killer pass or put a decent ball in #swfc

No spark. Nothing on wings. Fletcher isolated. Bannan not at it. Lee not where he’s been in the past. No width coming from the fullbacks. And then there’s big Dominic Iorfa….reight bloke and a shining light #swfc

Yet again Bannan under performs but waves his arms about slagging everyone else…. Does my head in!! Luongo 10x the player!! Can't even speak about Reach 🤦♂️ #SWFC

I’ve slept on it and looked at the stats from last night. #swfc had 12 corners last night. Bannan took 10. Not one obvious chance created from any. Most didn’t get past the first post. His range of passing is great but he can’t take a set piece. So why’s he on them?

Worry for me last n8 was that out of 11 players noone looked bothered, only 1 and that was Iorfa. Maybe it's off the field stuff effecting players but noone looked like they could be bothered, even borner and bannan who usually are 100%. No movement at all. Worrying times #swfc

Against Birmingham, Bannan made 87 touches, created three chances, had two shots, completed 85.7% of his 70 passes, whipped in 11 crosses, made one tackle and made two successful dribbles. The Scotland international failed to register a shot on target, failed to make an interception and spurned 73% of his crosses.
Wednesday’s poor run of form sees them slipped down the table, so Garry Monk is expected to make one or two changes ahead of Saturday’s trip to Charlton Athletic.
How will Sheffield Wednesday fare against Charlton Athletic?
Sam Hutchinson lost his place after a poor performance against West Bromwich Albion (November 23), so Bannan can’t afford any more below-par showings.
