Marco Matias has now been confirmed as yet another departure from Sheffield Wednesday this week as manager Steve Bruce looks to big changes this summer to ensure there are brighter days ahead of the club.

Portuguese winger Matias made the switch to Hillsborough from Nacional back in 2015 and in his years with us, the 29-year-old has only notched up 38 starting appearances with a further 34 showings from the substitutes bench, but he has chipped in with some important goals and assists. Seven of those goals and two of those assists came this season.

Despite becoming a key player for Bruce following his arrival at the club, Matias’s future lies elsewhere and he joins Almen Abdi, George Boyd, Gary Hooper, Daniel Pudil and David Jones on the released list when there contracts expire over the summer.

Taking to social media to confirm his departure, he sent a thank you message to the fans on his Facebook page.

“Thank you to all the support during this 4 years. In the good and in the bad times. I was really happy. And thank you to Sheffield Wednesday FC for realising one of my kid dreams, letting me play football in England. Wawaw.”
