Sam Winnall has revealed that he’s tested positive for Covid-19. The 29-year-old posted a message on his Instagram account to explain that he didn’t have any symptoms but acquired a test from Sheffield Wednesday “out of curiosity” and will now have to remain isolated until he recovers.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

He said: “I know most of you will be sick of hearing this but I urge everyone who reads this to stay at home. I had no symptoms, no problems and no indications I had the virus. But after doing a test out of curiosity, I have tested positive for Covid-19.”

The timing is strange, however, as Wednesday’s players haven’t trained together for a number of weeks and should have been adhering to the Government’s lockdown measures. Winnall is meant to be at home, only leaving his house for groceries and exercise, so how has he contracted the virus?

Whether the 29-year-old is the only Wednesday player with Covid-19 remains to be seen though. The Owls did recently state that nobody in their squad was showing symptoms, but Winnall’s admission suggests others may have it and be unaware. Time will tell.

He added on Instagram: “This virus is invisible, anyone can have it. Thankfully, I am fine and not suffering. But that isn’t the case for everybody. Please stay at home, don’t be selfish and respect other people’s health.

“I know I’m very lucky to be in a position where I can get tested through the football club. As I understand that the tests are at a premium. But thankfully, I am okay and will continue to spread the message – stay at home, help the NHS and save lives.”

It’s important for people to stay at home and only leave if essential. We wish Sam Winnall a speedy recovery.
