Sheffield Wednesday Acadamy graduate Joe Wildsmith has dismissed the speculation linking him with a surprise move to Rotherham United this summer and insisted he’s perfectly happy at Hillsborough.

With reports surfacing last week of their potential interest I believe even manager Paul Warne rubbished the links but speaking to The Star this week, the 23-year-old answered a few questions about his future and he was relishing the chance to battle for the No 1 shirt alongside Keiren Westwood.

“The first I heard about Rotherham was when it flew around Twitter and in the press. But I’m at Sheffield Wednesday and that is where my focus is now. I have got three years left on my contract and that’s my focus. People can talk and say this and that and say I’m going to go to Rotherham but for me I’m at Sheffield Wednesday and I am going to give it 100 per cent.”

Having slipped down to third place last season behind Westwood and Cameron Dawson, it’s simply a new season in his eyes and another opportunity to stake his claim for the role as well as playing his part in providing healthy competition.

Speaking further about the future, he was sensible enough not to rule anything out as you can never do that in the game, but it doesn’t sound like a player with itchy feet to me.

“I’ll see how the season goes and how the next few weeks go. For me, the focus is to try and see what happens here at Sheffield Wednesday. After that, who knows. But for me, I want to be here. I want to be fighting for a position and if that doesn’t happen, we’ll see what happens. But I can’t say I want to leave or anything like that, because I don’t. I want to be at Sheffield Wednesday and fight for my place.”
