Sheffield Wednesday faced Sunderland in midweek in the EFL Cup first round clash at the Stadium of Light.

Manager Jos Luhukay’s side secured a 2-0 victory with goals coming from Marco Matias and Adam Reach on the night and we now face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the second round of the competition.

With a number of solid performances on the night that saw Barry Bannan and Reach himself being two that can be easily named for their performances, there were others, Liam Palmer, Frederick Nielsen and Alex Hunt being others to impress some in their own way.

One man’s individual showing left a fair bit to be desired but I find the criticisms a touch harsh myself if I’m being fair as there’s no way you can consider George Boyd to be a defensive player in my mind and that was the role he was given in the match.

I think it’s harsh, plenty will disagree but Boyd is not a player you give any kind of defensive responsibilities to and we seem to insist on it.
