Cameron Dawson has an uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday with his contract expiring next summer. The 24-year-old could be on his way out of Hillsborough in 2020 if an extension can’t be agreed, but his latest comments to the Sheffield Star suggest he’s not looking to leave.

He’s spent seven years at Hillsborough after joining from Sheffield United in 2012, going on to make 46 appearances in all competitions, conceding 57 goals and keeping 15 clean sheets.

When asked about staying at Wednesday, Dawson said: “This is my club. I have been a bit unfortunate in that I have never seen the good days with this club. When I was growing up, it was the tough days of League One and scratching around in the Championship.

“I would love to be part of this club when we do get there (the Premier League). I want to really be part of it when there is a positive time for this football club.” The former England u19 international has made seven appearances in all competitions this season and is currently first-choice under Garry Monk.

Dawson had spent the majority of the campaign as backup to Keiren Westwood before being brought in to replace the injured and out-of-form goalkeeper in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham City (November 27). He kept his place between the sticks in their 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic (November 30) too.

He’s made five Championship appearances this season, conceding only two goals and keeping three clean sheets. Wednesday have won four and drawn one of the five matches Dawson’s started. Westwood is yet to return from injury, but it’s unlikely he’ll get his place in the starting XI back unless the 24-year-old’s form dips.
