Garry Monk “doesn’t expect to see” Sheffield Wednesday midfielder face Wigan

Garry Monk says he “(doesn’t) expect to see” Sam Hutchinson face Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night as the 30-year-old is still recovering from a foot injury. Hutchinson was stamped on in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers on Friday and was brought off after 54 minutes.

He’s still not 100% ahead of the Owls’ midweek encounter with Wigan and may be forced to sit out as a result. Monk told Dom Howson of the Sheffield Star: “(Monday) is the first training session. I don’t expect to see (Hutchinson) there but I will see with the physios when (we) have a meeting.”

Hutchinson has made 24 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring and creating two goals. He’s been a regular under Monk, so his absence is a blow. The timing couldn’t be worse either as Wednesday are suffering an injury crisis in midfield – Massimo Luongo (groin), Kieran Lee (doubtful).

That being said, Monk still has Joey Pelupessy, Kieran Lee, Barry Bannan and Alex Hunt to call upon in Hutchinson absence. Wednesday need a win regardless of personnel. They’ve slipped down the Championship table in recent weeks and find themselves 10th with 42 points from 28 games, having lost four of their last five.

A win over Wigan could see the Owls move three places up the table if results go their way.
