Sheffield Wednesday’s preparations for the coming 2018/19 Championship campaign stepped up a gear on Friday evening as we travelled to Sincil Bank to face Lincoln City in our opening pre-season friendly of the summer.

A second-half goal from Fernando Forestieri was enough to give struggling Wednesday fans something to cheer about given this summer has been dominated by talk of saving money, trimming the first team group and very little when it came to strengthening and potential realistic arrivals.

As is normal, head coach Jos Luhukay took the opportunity to field two completely different sides in each half as he got minutes into as many players as possible and the game was largely balanced with fitness remaining the aim at this stage of the year.

Opening with a win will help confidence purposes though, and it’s onto the clash with Mansfield Town now. Owls fans will be hoping that the time between both games will be filled with news of at least one, if not two, arrivals so optimism can lift.

Wednesday:

Westwood (Dawson 46), Baker (Palmer 46), Lees (van Aken 46), Thorniley (Nielsen 46), Lee (Bannan 46), Fox (Pudil 46), Hunt (Boyd 46), Reach (Preston 46), Hutchinson (Pelupessy 46), Matias (Forestieri 46), Joao (Nuhiu 46).

Goals – Forestieri (55).
