A former Wednesday youth player is in with a chance of qualifying for the London Olympics at the Aviva UK Trials in Birmingham this weekend.

Mukhtar Mohammed came through the Hillsborough youth ranks and looked destined for a future in football before turning his attentions to the athletics track a few years ago.

A place in arguably the biggest sporting event in the world is now just 800 metres away for the runner, who competes in the final of the event at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium later today at the Aviva UK Trials.

Mohammed, who took bronze in the European U23 Championships last year, won his heat in a time of 1:50.9 to qualify for today’s final.

He’ll need to finish in the top two and secure the A qualifying time of 1:45.60 to guarantee a place in Team GB this summer – his personal best so far this year is 1:46.17 – enough to secure a B qualifying standard.
