Explained: Why Keiren Westwood missed Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham City

|

Keiren Westwood was dropped for Cameron Dawson in Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham City, but Garry Monk left the 35-year-old out of the matchday squad too.

Westwood was expected to be axed after making a series of errors between the sticks, but it appears he was also carrying an injury that led to him missing out in midweek.

Monk told the Yorkshire Post: “Cameron’s going to be playing. Keiren’s got a little bit of an injury, but it would have been a decision I would have had to make anyway.

“He knows as well as me when you’re in that position you can’t afford to make a number of mistakes in a short period of time. I believe in Cameron and this is his opportunity. It’s up to him to take it.”

Dawson has made six appearances in all competitions, conceding only three goals and making four clean sheets. He’s conceded only one league goal in four games for Wednesday too.

Westwood has made 15 Championship appearances, conceding 16 goals and keeping only four clean sheets. His individual errors have contributed to three of the last four goals Wednesday have conceded, so Monk was left with little choice but to make a change.

The goalkeeper’s shoulder injury meant he didn’t make the bench, forcing Monk to name Paul Jones in the squad against Birmingham as Joe Wildsmith was still injured too. Whether the Wednesday boss will have Westwood or Wildsmith back in time to face Charlton Athletic remains to be seen, however.
