Tom Lees has struggled for form this season and may have an uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday. The 29-year-old has been a regular since November, but he’s been inconsistent in 2020 while making uncharacteristic errors at centre-back.
Dominic Howson of Yorkshire Live believes Garry Monk should take the captain’s armband off Lees to allow him to turn his form around. He said: “I think Lees would be the first to admit that he has lacked consistency.
“He is not as vocal on the pitch as (Glenn) Loovens but players respect him in the dressing room. If it was up to me, I think would take the captain’s armband off Lees and allow him to focus on his own game and get back to his best.”
Lees has made 231 appearances in all competitions since joining Wednesday from Leeds United in 2014, scoring nine goals and making seven assists. The 29-year-old has made 26 appearances across the board this season, but his poor form may see Dominic Iorfa and Julian Borner get the nod.
He’s been guilty of playing short backpasses, cheaply relinquishing possession as the last man in defence and napping from set-pieces. Vital Wednesday have named a number of centre-backs who could come in and replace Lees next season, but it remains to be seen who the Owls will bring in.
