Sam Hutchinson may have played his last game for Sheffield Wednesday after being dropped following a fallout with Garry Monk. The 30-year-old hasn’t featured in Wednesday’s last five league games and Dom Howson of the Sheffield Star says Hutchinson is now training with the u23s.
The midfielder match fitness could now waver too as he’s yet to turn out for Neil Thompson’s side. Hutchinson’s last first-team outing came in their FA Cup win over Queens Park Rangers (January 24), but he’s been left out of the u23s’ 2-2 draw with Leeds United (February 3) and meeting with Barnsley (February 18).
His contract up in the summer and a new deal doesn’t appear to be on the table. Hutchinson joined Wednesday from Chelsea in 2014 and has gone on to make 154 appearances in all competitions. The midfielder has struggled for form and been guilty of indiscipline, however, so he’s become surplus to requirements.
Monk prefers Kieran Lee, Massimo Luongo, Joey Pelupessy, Alex Hunt and Barry Bannan in midfield, so Hutchinson no longer has a future. It’s just unfortunate that his six years at Hillsborough will end in an acrimonious fashion.
