Explained: Are Sheff Wed still training? Have any players been confirmed for Covid-19?

|

According to Alex Miller of the Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday are still training despite the season being postponed due to Covid-19. Garry Monk continues to oversee the players at ‎Middlewood Road and no symptoms have been reported for any personnel. That being said, Alex Miller confirms players haven’t been individually tested yet.

The season was meant to resume on April 4 but the EFL have pushed the date back to April 30. The decision means Wednesday will miss eight league games – Nottingham Forest (March 14), Bristol City (March 17), West Bromwich Albion (March 21), Swansea City (April 4), Preston North End (April 10), Queens Park Rangers (April 13), Huddersfield Town (April 18) and Fulham (April 25).

The Owls are currently 15th in the Championship with 48 points from 37 games, having won just two league games in 2020. The break may have done them a favour as they’ve been spiralling down the table since the turn of the year. Whether Monk will continue heading training sessions for another month remains to be seen, however.

Should the football season be cut short now or delayed for weeks/months due to COVID-19?

End the season now

Delay for weeks/months

Government advice is to practice social distancing and to avoid gatherings wherever possible, so Wednesday players might have to self-isolate. The Owls aren’t expected to play for a minimum of six weeks, so it makes little sense to be at Middlewood on a daily basis.
