Wednesday’s hunt for automatic promotion from League One this season took a big hit at St James Park as the Owls slumped to defeat against struggling Exeter City.

Jermaine Johnson continued his fine run of form to fire Gary Megson’s men ahead in the second half before the Grecians hit back with goals from Billy Jones and captain David Noble to leave Wednesday with a long trip back to South Yorkshire.

The clash was one of just three in the division to go ahead due to the current cold snap. Promotion rivals Sheffield United also played against Wycombe Wanderers, winning comfortably 3-0 to close the gap to a point with two games in hand.

Megson made big changes to the understrength side that lost 3-0 against Blackpool in the FA Cup in midweek with Johnson coming back into the side, while players such as Jose Semedo and Gary Madine also came back into the starting eleven.

The visitors were undoubtedly favourites for the clash, with City failing to score in their previous four matches and winning just once in their last ten.

But they were visibly eager to improve their form and former Barnsley man Daniel Nardiello struck an effort just over the bar minutes into play.

Exeter looked the better side early on and they had the ball in the back of the net after seven minutes, that man Nardiello again, only to see it chalked off for offside.

The Owls burst into life on a chilly afternoon when loanee John Bostock’s shot took a deflection for a corner and defender Miguel Llera forced a fine save from City stopper Artur Krysiak from the resulting corner.

The chances saw Wednesday take control of the first half for long periods. But for all their time on the ball, they struggled to carve out many clear cut chances.

The best chances, in fact, fell to the hosts and Nardiello again, who was twice thwarted by impressive blocks by Owls defender Lewis Buxton as the half came to a close.

Half-Time: Exeter 0-0 Wednesday

Wednesday introduced Chris Lines for Bostock at the interval as the visitors looked for another creative way through the City defence.

The Owls continued to have the best of the ball and they finally managed to breakthrough the home defender in the 66th-minute through in-form Johnson.

Buxton’s long throw-in wasn’t dealt with by the Grecians’ defence and Johnson smashed home a powerful effort that have Krysiak no chance with.

It should have been enough to give Wednesday the confidence to see the game out but the hosts hit back just two minutes later to get back on level terms.

Paul Tisdale’s men won a free-kick in a dangerous position and Jones stepped up to steer his effort into the back of the net for the leveller.

It was a sucker-punch for Wednesday, who were demoralised from the equaliser, but they kept plugging away in their search for a second, throwing substitute Mike Jones on to add more to their attack.

Lines forced a good save from the City stopper as the game progressed, but it was another set-piece that won all three points for Exeter late on.

This time it was Noble who took command of a free-kick and sent a dipping effort beyond Owls stopper Stephen Bywater and into the back of the net for the winner.

  • why do we never take advantage and put teams we play and them around us to the sword. that is a massive dent and maybe the result that ended our hopes of the auto spot and im not confident of going up through the playoffs.
and why is lowe not play from the off???

  • personally felt gary madine greatly underperformed, not sure about the bostock sub either. JJ is playing well but today we looked worst upfront. Hope the team get it together because today was a real shame and when you look at the team we are better than that. I would start with Rob Lowe next match or maybe JJ upfront. Lines was weak when he came on. Still nothing changes being a wednesdayite, you never know what to expect. Positives, thought Llera and Batth had good games.

  • I liked Rob Lowe in Tommy Boy and thought he was pretty good in the Austin Powers films, but I really don’t know that he’ll add much to our starting 11. Still, worth a punt after that performance I guess.

  • I liked Arthur Lowe in Dad’s Army but as Corporal Rob Jones might say “Don’t panic!” With a third of the season remaining I’d far sooner GM had to deal with these problems now. I’m more disappointed that we chose to sacrifice our place in the next round of the Cup to improve our chances of getting 3pts against an Exeter side currently riding the crest of a slump. A draw would’ve been disappointing, a defeat was unthinkable. I think team selection is the main issue now. Before Xmas I think we all knew our best XI and the positions that required strengthening during January. Things didn’t go according to plan and with an average of 5-6 changes each match I’m hoping we don’t need to go back to the drawing board. Can JJ and Madine play together? I’d still like to see CO’G wide left, though I doubt it’ll ever happen Is Clinton worthy of a place on the bus?. Has Bostik come unstuck? And is Jones The Wing worth a gamble for a full 90minutes? Anyway, congrats to newman87 for running away with the ‘Clairvoyant Of The Week’ award. The prize being an oversized set of comic dentures and free licence to go practice on Meggo’s ass! In fairness though, I think a few of us saw this one coming. The time to bounce back is NOW.

  • O’grady is playing ok, but we just don’t score enough goals when he’s playing. Time for Lowe to get a run of starts for me. He’s prolific at this level and that’s what we need! Come on Wednesday, WTID

  • Wining is as much about mentality as it is about skill. I agree with the team selection for the Blackpool game, but the mentality was wrong, sending the team out knowing that it doesn?t really matter is dangerous, and this is what I believe Megson did. This winning mentality cannot be turned on and off like a tap. Man U have it and continue to be a contender when on paper their team is probably 4th or 5th in the Prem. at best, they have a will to win installed in them no matter what the competition or opponents. Hopefully Megson can find a way to turn this back on for Stevanage and for the rest of the season.

  • Yet another ”poor performance” yesterday , really should be collecting max points against these teams …..
Come on GM , please stop with the chopping and changing of the team each week !! Lets get back on track this week against Stevenage (which wont be easy on current form) ….

    1 weaver

    2 buxton
    4 batth
    5 jones
    17 johnson

    6 semedo
    7 prutton
    11 johnson
    15 bostock

    9 o’grady
    30 lowe

My selection for tuesday night and give them a run together , give Lowe a start , proven at this level . Madine not with it at the min .

  • Johnson’s banned, so he can’t jump back in at LB. As for d!ck cheese blunts fans getting on here…seriously you sap, do one, your tin pot club is just a retirement place for reject owls!

  • the truth is we dont have a great goal scorer ogrady and lowe are not good enough and madine is hit and miss JJ is not a striker as we all know and no one from midfield will score enough goals we need someone up front on loan when that window reopens

  • Okay, I said I wasn’t going to do this but here goes anyway: I’d like to see if Lowe and M. Jones can rediscover the chemistry that worked so well at their previous club. I’d like to see CO’G wide left where his pace and strength would probably worry more than one defender. I’d like to see Madine given some quality crosses to meet, from both wings and overlapping full backs (Buxton & Reda, when he’s served his ban). I’d like to see if Bostik can hold central midfield together and provide some creative link play, otherwise send him back. And I’d like to see JJ as an impact sub to bring on after the opposition have been run ragged for an hour or so. And right now, at 7.00am Monday morning, I’d go Bywater & Llera rather than Weaver & R. Jones.

  • I now feel that the pigs have the upper hand, and will most likely steal the second automatic promotion spot. for ages, we’ve been scraping past teams, winning by one goal, or drawing against teams that we should really be hammering. We were ***** poor against blackpool (waste of £15!!)yet the piggies from across the city are winning by 3 or 4 goals most weeks. I do think that we are missing Marshall and the old Madine (where’s he gone?). IMHO, the last months of the season are going to be really hard for us, and I fear that we may even miss out on the playoffs – stevenage will be a telling game. Come on Meggo – SORT IT OUT!

  • Not a great deal to say about this result apart from we missed a great opportunity to apply pressure on teams around us. It’s not the first time this season and like others I think automatics could be slipping away from us now. At the end of the day promotion by any means is a must. Trying to stay positive as we are still up there albeit a few games ahead of others around us. Come on GM and the squad, time to man up a bit. WTID UTO.

  • Shows what a class team the Blunts are there best player is an alleged rapist and most if not all pig fan are ok with that and use it as part of taunts, Do you really have nothing better to do than comment on a page that isn’t associated with your so called football team or are a closet Wednesday fan who just wants attention?!

  • as disappointing as this result was I’m sure utd and huddersfield will slip up from time to time and we’ll take advantage, although they’ve got games in hand we’ve got the points on the board. As the biggest club in the league we have to accept all teams lift their game when they play us and exeters winner was a bit of a fluke, 99 times out of a 100 that would miss!! I’m sure we’ll smash utd at hillsborough so all will be rosy again, especially after a welcome 3 points tomorrow night when it will be a valentines day massacre of stevenage, we owe them one for sure so if GM can’t get a response tomorrow night then Houston (not Whitney), we’ve got a problem.

  • Looks like were going to miss out again for the sake of about half million spent Jan Can’t rely on loan players to the extent were doing
Don’t like complaining about MM but looks like he’s trying to get promotion on the cheap.

  • ecco, not really a subject to make fun of. Wouldn’t expect any less from a blunt but we are better than that. Don’t lower yourself to their level…. WTID UTO.
