Former Wednesday legend Chris Waddle helped captain a team of footballing legends including Ian Rush and Des Walker to victory in the latest Sky One series of ‘The Match’.

The Owls winger, who made 129 starts for the club scoring 14 goals in a four-year stint at Hillsborough, steered the Legends team to a comfortable 2-0 win over the Celebrity team – and even netted a sublime second half-strike before lifting the trophy at St James’ Park on Sunday evening.

The Sky One series is now in its third successful year, attracting a capacity 52,000 crowd at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park, and pits former footballing legends against footballing-wannabe celebrities from actors to sportsmen.

This year Waddle lined-up alongside former Hillsborough colleague Des Walker, Ian Rush, Gary McAllister, Nigel Winterburn, Colin Hendy and Dennis Irwin to name but a few – and came through the match relatively comfortably after a first 15-minutes which was dominated by the Celebs.

The Celebs team, managed by former England boss Graham Taylor, included Wednesday fan Tommy Craig, Harvey, Darren Campbell, Ralf Little, Alec Stewart and Mark Bosnich amongst others.

The Legends had won the previous two clashes but Graham Taylor’s men were confident ahead of the tie – and made an impressive start as Dennis Irwin almost headed in to his own net in the early stages.

But the Celebs pressure started to fade and the Legends upped their gear, with Ian Rush netting the opener after being left unmarked in the box from a dangerous free-kick – and after that it was all one-way traffic with the Legends taking back the years with some sleek passing and moving.

And a superb solo effort from Waddle doubled the Legends lead in the second half as he cut inside right-back Ralf Little and slotted a superb effort by Bosnich to remind Wednesday fans of the good old days at Hillsborough.

I wonder if Paul Sturrock was watching? Maybe we could do with Waddle back in our side…he certainly wouldn’t look out of place in our current squad!…
