Everton have recalled on-loan Owls midfielder Ross Barkley with immediate effect.

The 18-year-old has spent two months at Hillsborough but Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest will be his last in an Owls shirt. The Toffees have opted to recall the highly-rated youngster owing to injuries to Phil Neville, Darron Gibson and Kevin Mirallas.

The hot prospect joined Wednesday initially on a one-month loan deal but both clubs agreed to extend that by a further four weeks. Barkley featured in 13 matches, starting twelve of them and scoring four goals.

The news will mean Owls boss Dave Jones will have to shuffle his pack for Saturday’s visit of Leicester City to Hillsborough.
