Wednesday were forced to settle for a share of the spoils at Victoria Road in a controversial League One clash with Dagenham & Redbridge.

Gary Teale fired the Owls ahead in the first half but the Daggers grabbed a point through a controversial Danny Green spot-kick with ten minutes to go.

Owls boss Gary Megson was also sent to the stands in a game which leaves Wednesday just four poinsts above the relegation places.

Megson made three changes to the side that lost at Southampton last time out. New loan signing Joey O’Brien came into the Owls midfield, as did Darren Potter and Chris Sedgwick. Lee Nicholls, another loan addition, had to make do with a place on the bench with Richard O’Donnell picked to continue in goal.

The game started in scrappy fashion, with neither side stamping their authority on proceedings in the opening exchanges.

It was a bit of a midfield battle, but it played to Wednesday’s advantage and they foumd the breakthrough with their first real threatening attack in the 17th-minute.

The Owls have become more of a threat from set-pieces, especially with the arrival of centre-back Rob Jones, and his height played a key role when Michael Morrison’s long throw-in into the Daggers box allowed him to flick the ball into the path of Teale, who made no mistake in giving the visitors the lead.

The Owls looked happy to try and sit back on their lead and the hosts hit back with plenty of possession play but struggled to break through a resolute Wednesday defence.

Chances were few and far between for the hosts, Bas Savage having one good opportunity from a loose ball following a corner from the home side but O’Donnell came racing from his goal to stop the danger.

Daggers skipper Mark Arber had another opportunity from a corner kick but kicked fresh air after totally mis-judging the path of the ball.

The Daggers did have the ball in the back of the net before half-time but saw it chalked off by the referee after he had deemed O’Donnell to be fouled inside the box following a long ball forward by Damien McCrory which rolled over the line.

Half-Time: Daggers 0-1 Wednesdsay

Wednesday will have been keen to find a second goal to put them in command of the game and on course for three points, and they started the second half with attacking intent.

Teale almost connected with a Chris Sedgwick cross a few minutes after the restart but the ball just evaded him.

The Daggers upped their game and enjoyed more of the possession, with Wednesday’s stubborn defence holding out.

When the hosts did find a way through they also found O’Donnell in good form, the youngster saving well to deny Jon Nurse in the 55th minute.

Wednesday struggled to create much in front of goal in the second half but they also looked more than capable of stopping their hosts finding an equaliser.

That was until ten minutes to go when the Daggers, who went into the game on the back of five games without a loss, won a controversial penalty.

The referee adjudged Sedgwick to have handled a Darren Currie-struck shot inside the box and the man in black had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Green stepped up and made no mistake with the spot-kick to get the hosts on level terms.

The Owls almost regained the lead instantly but Tony Roberts made a superb save to deny Potter from long-range.

The Owls also had claims for a penalty of their own but the officials waved away the protests, much to the annoyance of Megson, who was sent to the stands for carrying his protests on too far.

The Owls will have been disappointed not to hold on for maximum points, but the point could well prove a handy one in the battle against the drop.

Full-Time: Daggers 1-1 Wednesday

  • Dull, boring and utterly depressing. I always like to give mangers a chance but don?t believe that Megson is the right guy for this job . His track record is proven, defensive 4-5-1 long ball crap, making every game a scrap in midfield is not what I personally want to see at this club. Im sure he would love to put 10 defenders throughout the 2012 season if he could. Players for once were not at fault (for their ability) OK the referee was the worst I have seen all season but if our biggest goal threat is going to be from a throw in then we have problems. We battled hard, but with a game that we need to win, with the score at 1-1 we make no sub?s!! leave one up front and leave Heff on the bench yet again!! and then go defensive. A million miles away from our 1st game of the season when we were poor but won 2-0!! To say we got rid of Irvine because he was driving fans away then this guy is going to leave our stadium empty.. If this is the style of football Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is going to adopt then I will reluctantly decline my season ticket next year.

p.s. Guy?s can we please remove the poll ?Can Wednesday still achieve the play-offs this season ?

  • Olly… O’Connor for Miller in the 92nd minute… hardly going to do much is he. Agree with Joseph Megson praised us yesterday which proves we are long ball 1 man up front. How Sheffield Wednesday can go to Dag & Red and play defensivly is an embarrasment. I don’t like getting rid of managers but it is so blatently obvious we are going no where. And by praising us yesterday just highlights the fact we are not doing anything next year and long balls is all we can expect.

  • I could also understand that it was a penalty. We would have been screaming for it if was reversed right? As for players like M. Morrison (Who won League 1 with Leicester) M. Reynolds (Turned down £800,000 from Rangers for him) Madine (Probably the only player who has looked decent) …I think they’re all clearly low on confidence… and telling them to hoof it to Madine will solve nothing just make it worse. I wish we’d listened to these Bolton fans because the whole reason they was so annoyed is because they had a team with so much potential and they were clearly right by where they are sitting now…

  • Just before Irvine left, we were shipping goals at an alarming rate. I can understand Megson playing a more defensive route now and trying to build a platform to then play from but just hope this isn’t the way forward next season!!

  • thankfully pur next 3 games are at home to pretty average teams…..actually thats a bad thing these days. we need to make our games in hand count now, only 4 points clear…….dire!!!!

  • If we can get 3 or 4 points from our next three games then this would put us in a much stronger position!

  • This is exactly how Megson played at Bolton. Nothing will change. Dezzy… Next 3 games are “average”… Brentford who beat us, Colchester who drew with us but are a decent side in this league and Tranmere who beat us 3-0 a month ago. So expect the same long balls and defensive formation (Which still concedes). We could have the best footballing side in the division if we had a non-defensive manager. We have gone back not forward. Megson Out!

  • I understand we had a lot of bookings in this game – have we suddenly become a lot tougher or was this yet another example of shocking referreeing?

  • we didn’t deserve to win – we did nowt second half with a good half time lead – shouldv’e changed it after 60mins when we were getting battered – they attack we boot i up to madine and they attack again – awful absolutley awful, megson can blame ref but we didn’t do enough to win should’ve brought a striker on for one of the anonymous midfielders at 1-0 and tried to push them back. AWFUL!!!! thought we looked better against southampton – missed osbourne and we are so much better with 2 up front, hope gm will go for it a bit more in these home games. UTO

  • Megson has moaned because the referee and John Still was being friendly, so what… Its good to see someone getting on with the ref for once. Honestly don’t understand why the penalty was “controversial” we would of been going mad if they hadn’t given that penalty for us. Megson is looking for excuses. Everyone is starting to get what them Bolton fans were saying.

  • Not going to say I told you so… but… Jeremy Peace had the right idea when Megson was sacked from West Brom. Any club that Megson was candidate for, he went to personally and told them how much of a mistake they were making. Apparently. It would be just like Bolton to not heed such inspiring words of advice. Bolton hated him not only for the dire football, terrible managerial ability and lack of personality, but because of the way he and only HE destroyed our European dream. The man is a disgrace. How he continually gets employed I will never know. Best of luck for you lot til the end of the season. How did Joey O’B play against Dagenham? Long way from his best you’ll understand.

  • “The Owls looked happy to try and sit back on their lead”. Oh the memories, you’d better get used to that!

  • Under megson didnt the might wanderers become the first british team to beat red star belgrade? or get a fantastic draw at bayern munich? or knock out spanish giants athletico madrid? how is that destroying your european dreams? most would consider that an over-achievment for little old bolton wouldnt they?

  • Dezzy he wasn’t the man who took them to Europe. He was the guy who had them knocked out with a very decent squad. These Bolton fans aren’t idiots. And they were proven right with Coyle because now they’re a very very decent premier league side

  • Don’t get to go see many games as i live miles away so i always rely on you guys that post on here to let me know how good or bad we are! By all accounts we are pretty terrible lately but can anyone tell me why Osbourne didnt play?? From what people are saying on here he seems to have been the best of a bad bunch of late!

  • Not interested in the style if play, as we haven’t a decent squad playing as a team, megsons no doubt seen where are weakness is and we all know it’s at the back and across middle, you can’t pollish a turd!, give the man a chance, if were still as bad early doors next season then fine!!! Uto.

  • was never a penalty what a joke proberly should of had 3points here but for a dodgy ref

  • SheffWed93, i never said he did. what kind of people go on other sites to moan about a manager long gone? idiots. what type of people complain about beating athletico madrid in the uefa cup knockout stages? idiots. i used to work in bolton so you dont have to tell me about the people, you have to look uner rocks to find the supporters, most of them are united fans up that neck of the woods. decent squad? better than sporting lisbon? no!!!

  • OWL25… We don’t have a decent playing squad.
Weaver (Premier League goalkeeper at Man City)
    Osbourne (Highly rated Villa youngster)
Miller (80 goals from midfield in his career championship/prem)
O’Connor (Won champinship with West Brom has played premier league)
Teale (Premier League at Wigan and Derby)
Morrison (140 + goals in his career in premier league and champ)

Surely in our squad we have enough quality to beat anyone? Irvine wasn’t for the job and we rushed into getting someone too soon. Megson’s long balls embarrass us as a football club because we deserve better. and Retford it was a penalty… If it had been reversed and that was for us you would have been screaming penalty like all of us.

  • i have no objections with the 4-5-1, i dont mind it away from home. a good draw at bournemouth, wins at oldham and carlisle, and a draw at dagenham, mainly due to a dubious ref (from what i hear from the masses anyway). its been effective and picked us up some decent points. a big no-no for at home though, our midfield dont have the legs to get box to box anymore, but i do like the thought of a JOB and osbourne partnership though long term though ( all being well in the summer).

  • No sheffwed93, we have a squad of mainly has beens, an a couple of youngsters that are apparantly highly rated, anyway hardly worth bragging about are they, were in a relegation battle, top squad!!!! I think meggy will dontje buisness when he gets his own crop of players, he’s obviously got no mconfidence in them, I’m sure if they could play eye catching football that prvides results he would play that type of football, they can’t and so he wont.

  • Dezzy they moaned because they were crap… they were 18th in the league when they went on this Uefa cup run. He couldn’t get Elmander to score, Gary Cahill wasn’t half the player he has turned out to be since Coyle took over. The reason they were in europe was because of Allardyce. Sammy Lee took over and has no real quality as a manager. Then Megson with a team of very good players at Bolton went long ball (Elmander couldn’t score) who like Madine was isolated upfront. (which Megson has praised how we played the other day). Agreed we’ve had some good results away from home. But nothing has changed since Irvine defensively and our form of attack has got worse. And as i’ve said… the Bolton fans were clearly right because a Coyle took over (A very good manager) who took a very very below par Burnley side to the Premier League and then they most likely would have stayed up under him then took over Bolton and they play good football and are 7th in the Premier League, FA Cup Semi final… Megson just doesn’t do it for me and he won’t be the man to take us up.

  • OWL25… We’ve had 2 inept managers this season.. Irvine who has only managed 2 clubs and Megson who is known for his long ball tactics. The squad is good enough from players. Same as when Turner was manager in this league and we all slated how poor that team was and there was no way of going up, then Sturrock took over who had won League 1 and known for getting the best out of his players took us up with players with no real record (Whelan, Brunt, McGovern…). This team we have has the ability to beat anyone… we all know it and that is why we are so frustrated. But Irvine (inexperienced) and Megson (Long ball specialist) are clearly not the men for this job. If we got rid of every player we had we’ll have the same problems because of the type of football which isolates you in your own half while long balling it to one striker who hopes to get on the end of it when the majority of the time the two centre halfs are going to nod it down and bring it straight at the midfield every single time.

  • SheffWed93, he kept them up when they was bottom when he took over, including beating the likes of united to do so, he had some fantastic results in europe, more than shoddy bolton deserved (and yes, i know he didnt get them there) boltons best 2 players? elmander and cahill? which manager took them to bolton? thats right it was mr megson. the simple truth is they didnt want him and made that clear from the start……much like yourself.

  • the squad is not amazing but neither are any of the teams around us – dagenham are a very poor side – getting a draw was a poor result – megspn should take the blame as second half all we did was defend – he should have brought someone on to support madine and take the pressue off our defence but he stuck with it and we got what we deserved – thats what happens when you don’t bother attacking sides. i’m willing to give megson a chance and the team is clearly completely lacking in confidence but megson got it wrong second half saturday and we paid the price – hopefully he will learn from this and change it tonight.

  • Oh, and the poor football and long ball nonsense is just pure lazy, come up with something new. We leaked goals and needed tighten up, that was clear, and thats what he’s trying to do. anybody who couldnt see that needs to pop some glasses on. megson wasnt my choice either but im not pathetic enough to start calling for his head after a few games with the rubbish he’s been left with.

  • I for one would have been calling for a pen if what transpired had happened in the other box but then I still protest that it was not a good call. Hell I would have been calling for a pen if it’d been near an arm… (I’ll call for anything if it gives us an advantage at the moment!) simply put his arm was down by his side and the ball struck his arm not the other way round. Can anyone remember the last free-kick given inside the box?? Have refs forgotten that this is still an option?!?! As for the game as a whole it was fairly poor with few chances at either end in both halfs. You could take this as a positive and a negative, ideally the result shouldn’t have hung on a Ref call we should have had it won before that. This being said we looked harder to break down although I think we played the 4-5-1 in a negative manner. The chosen side I think was almost as negative as we could have been. I’ll probably get shot for this but I would have played DJ instead on the left, Osbourne and O’Brien in the centre either side of someone Miller probably) given complete license to support Madine at every oppurtunity. My heart for one sank when I saw Potters name! Obviously if Osbourne wasn’t available that’s different but still I wouldn’t have played Potter! Hoping for more purpose tonight going forward and I think Megson will field 4-5-1 changing to 4-4-2 late on if there is no goal threat. WTID

  • Its not lazy it is clueless… But that is what he’s encouraging us to do. So were going to concede with the amount of pressure on us. This is how we will play regardless of whose in the team. And I’m shouting for his head because of his sad antics the other day more more importantly the fact he will not get us up and nothings changed apart from out attacking side which has got worse. I’m saying get him gone sooner rather than later. He’s not the man. And it will ruin him reputation as a player unfortunately.

  • And Megson brought them to Bolton but couldn’t get the best out of them. They were fighting relegation from Sammy Lee who has no ability as a manager but then when Megson took over they had a squad to be where around mid table which is why the Bolton fans weren’t happy because they knew there squad had the capability to be where they are now so they were right because Coyle has done that and got the best out of players like Elmander and Cahill. Like us he’s not getting the best out of the players just like an inexperienced irvine couldn’t. And yeah they beat Man Utd but they couldn’t beat simple teams that they clearly had a better squad than.

  • how do you know thats why the bolton fans werent happy? are you a mind reader or their appointed spokesman? they were giving him stick before his first game, then they accepted him when he did well to keep them up, then after a pretty average start, they were all over him again, its a very simple persons mentality they have which seems to have spread to our club. if irvine couldnt get the best out of them, now megson cant, perhaps its the bunch of past it, freebies who are the problem.

  • Witty sarcasm? Poor banter. Its fact why they didn’t like Megson for them reasons. Look at them now, 7th you can’t call them simple. Its very obvious to me we’ve had two very poor managers this season. I’m more bothered about Wednesday and we’ve won 2 in 12. The sq we can beat anyone in this league but you can’t say we’re only good enough to win 2 in 12 all under Megson them 12 games?

  • yes i can, they are very simple people. they were after him out on the day of his appointment. he was asked to take them from bottom of the league and keep them up, which he did with ease, job done. i agree we should pick up more points, but you cant just point the finger at one man who stands on the sidelines, its the players on the pitch who should cop most opf the blame, blaming the new manager is just far too fickle.

  • He is too blame, he’s not new anymore. he’s had time with the players. He did keep Bolton up but thats all they did with him was fight relegation. Anyways all I care about is Wednesday and he was asked to make a run to the play-offs with us with a squad he and Mandaric knew they could at least make a go for it with nothing to lose but we’re fighting relegation….

  • Dont agree sheffwed93 you seam to know more about Bolton and there can you want him out its the players who need to pull there fingers out start doing the basics like passing to our own player etc and wearing the shirt with more pride and abitiion ,***** Bolton
