Steven Fletcher has been in discussions with Sheffield Wednesday over a new deal without much progress being made, but assistant manager Lee Bullen says talks with the 33-year-old are “positive” and “well done the road”.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

He told the Sheffield Star: “Ultimately until something is signed, you just never know. You never know who could come out of the woodwork and offer (Fletcher) something that’s out of this world. Talks are positive and well down the road.”

Fletcher joined Wednesday from Sunderland in 2016 and has gone on to make 135 appearances in all competitions, scoring 38 goals and making nine assists. The £30k-per-week striker has been prolific this season, notching 13 goals in 26 Championship appearances, but he could be on his way out if the two parties can’t come to an agreement.

Wednesday could be short on strikers next season with Jack Stobbs, Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu, Fraser Preston and Fernando Forestieri being out of contract in the coming months, so Monk can’t afford to lose his top scorer too.

Bullen’s comments suggest Fletcher is happy at Hillsborough and wants to stay, but Vital Sheff Wed have previously pondered why there’s been a lack of progress.

The Owls’ poor form in 2020 may see the 33-year-old considering his future while his advancing age might also be a factor – Fletcher is in the eve of his career and may only have one more deal left to sign.

With seven other first-teamers out of contract this summer, it’s perhaps more likely that Wednesday have been slow tying players down.
