Owls midfielder Giles Coke will be forced to endure a spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on a problematic knee this morning.

Coke has been used mainly as a substitute in recent weeks due to a reoccurring knee problem and Wednesday took the decision to put the midfielder under the knife today to get the problem sorted out.

And he’ll now join what seems to be an ever-growing injury list at Hillsborough and could be set to miss the hectic festive fixture schedule.

‘Giles is having an exploratory operation so we can find out exactly what the problem is,’ Owls boss Alan Irvine told the official Wednesday website.

‘His knee has been troubling him for a few weeks and hopefully we can get to the bottom of it.

‘It’s a blow for Giles because I think he has had an excellent start to his career at Sheffield Wednesday. He has played well, scored some goals and looked a very good player.’

Irvine has revealed that he’d like to strengthen his squad when the January transfer window opens as he aims to get the Owls on track for promotion this season.

He added: ‘Some people think that we have a big squad but that is just not the case and I, like any manager, would like to strengthen the squad where I can.’
