Manager Carlos Carvalhal has spoken of his frustration and disappointment following Sheffield Wednesday’s opening day loss to Preston North End.

Travelling to Deepdale for the game, Daniel Johnson’s second half penalty clinched a deserved three points for the hosts and our gaffer knew we hadn’t deserved anything from the encounter given the performance we put in on the day.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media post game to discuss the 90 minutes, a frustrated gaffer explained.

‘Today we absolutely did not deserve to win the game. We did not do the things we normally do, we didn`t play enough football and there were too many long balls. We didn`t get to enough second balls, Preston won the majority of them. It is a collective result, not down to individuals, and we now will analyse together what happened and come back much better in the next game.’

With over 5,700 travelling for the match, he clearly had sympathy for what they had to sit through in the one nil defeat. Asked if he understood the frustrations that were aired, he said.

‘Absolutely I understand. Our fans are fantastic, they follow us everywhere and we had many thousands here today. There was not much for them to enjoy because we did not perform anywhere near the levels that we are capable of. But since I have been here we have always shown a good result after a setback and I expect exactly the same this time.’

The Yorkshire Post cover his actual quotes a little more thoroughly than the OS.

‘We deserved to lose the game. We were out of everything. We ran too much in the first half but with no brain. We ran with emotion, we ran a lot but not in good ways.’

Probably sums it up.
