Carvalhal Talks Birmingham & Leeds

Head coach Carlos Carvalhal has said Sheffield Wednesday should’ve taken victory over Birmingham City in midweek, but he’s backed the team to respond against Leeds United on Sunday.

Heading to St Andrew’s Stadium for the midweek action, the hosts scored in the 76th minute to take all three points but the gaffer felt they had picked up an unmerited win given the chances Wednesday had on the day and the possession.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media following the game, Carvalhal felt the side had been unlucky, especially with Gary Hooper’s effort being ruled out for offside.

‘We should have won this game. We had 17 attempts on goal, 62% possession and a goal disallowed that in my opinion was legitimate. Birmingham`s goal was also very tight and this is the way that football can go sometimes. But we will continue to play, continue to fight and we will go again in a big game against Leeds on Sunday.’

He went on to say.

‘Do we feel sorry for ourselves? No. Will we fight? Yes. Of course, no one is happy at this moment because we lose two games on the row and this has not happened very often in the two and a half years I have been at Sheffield Wednesday.’

He added.

‘So is this the most demanding period so far? Of course. But only two games ago we lose just one game in seven. We have now lost two games in a few days so of course no one will be happy. I am not happy, the players are not happy, the fans are not happy. We have a very important game on Sunday and we need the help of the fans at Hillsborough.’

As for Leeds more specifically, he was looking for a reaction against them following back to back defeats.

‘It is not normal since I arrived that Sheffield Wednesday lose two games in a row. In the last two seasons, it has only happened very few times. We have quality, we have power and we have football to get out of this situation. We have a derby on Sunday against Leeds and it`s a good game to play in my opinion. All the time there is pressure, when you lose one game there is pressure at a club like Sheffield Wednesday. When you lose two, there is more pressure, I know that and I accept this. We deal with this pressure and what we must do is play hard and go for the next game.’
