GARY Megson sealed his first win as Wednesday boss as the Owls defeated Carlisle United 1-0 at Brunton Park in npower League One.

Skipper Tommy Miller netted the winning goal in the first-half to end Wednesday’s poor run of form.

It was a superb defensive performance by Wednesday, who kept their second clean sheet on the spin.

Megson was impressed by his side’s performance in the 0-0 draw at promotion-chasing Bournemouth in midweek and stuck with the same starting eleven for the trip to Cumbria.

The hosts also named an unchanged side, meaning former Owls defender Frank Simek lined up for United as captain, while Owls striker Gary Madine lined up against his former club for the first time since his move from Brunton Park in the January transfer window.

Wednesday made a positive start to the match and forced a corner inside the first 30 seconds after Liam Palmer made a powerful drive into the Carlisle half straight from kick-off.

Chances were limited in the opening ten minutes but it suited Wednesday, who kept their hosts quiet and had more of the ball in the opening exchanges, with Tommy Miller seeing a shot on goal deflected away from a throw-in.

Ben Marshall looked the man most likely to carve something out for the Cumbrians and his quick feet enabled him to swing in a dangerous cross, which no Carlisle attackers managed to get near and Owls stopper Nicky Weaver comfortably held on.

Owls striker Gary Madine was always going to be a key player on the return to his former club and his first chance came after 15 minutes when he connected with a Tommy Spurr cross but steered his effort high and wide.

The Owls had the better of the early play and they were rewarded on 20 minutes when skipper Miller fired them ahead with an unstoppable volley.

A deep cross was cleared from the far post by the Carlisle defender but the clearance fell straight to Miller, who powered his effort beyond United stopper Collin to the delight of the travelling Wednesday fans.

Unlike other recent matches on their travels, Wednesday were playing with confidence and Palmer almost got away from a neat flick-on by Madine only for the home defence to clear the danger.

Gary Teale then saw a shot saved by Collin when Miller was perhaps better placed to fire an effort on goal as the half-hour mark approached.

Carlisle had their best chance on goal in the 36th minute, with Marshall again looking the most dangerous attacker for the hosts as he lashed in a shot which Weaver pushed away.

The hosts came even closer just before half-time when Craig Curran zipped a shot just inches wide of Weaver’s goal from a Carlisle counter-attack.

United were enjoying their best spell of the match so far in the closing stages of the first half, putting Wednesday under a good amount of pressure.

But the whistle blew on a really good first half for the Owls as Carlisle failed to break down a stubborn Wednesday defence.

Half-Time: Carlisle 0-1 Wednesday

Wednesday made one change art the start of the second half with Darren Potter coming on for Liam Palmer in the centre of the Owls midfield.

And they almost doubled their lead just a few minutes after the restart from a set play but defender Reda Johnson got the ball stuck under his feet in front of goal and missed his chance.

Gary Abbott’s men were struggling against the discipline of Wednesday and the home support began to get frustrated with their lack of chances in front of goal.

The Owls made a change midway through the second half with Clinton Morrison coming on to replace Madine, who got a warm round of applause from both home and away fans, in attack.

The chances were very few and far between in the second half but although Carlisle had more of the possession, they couldn’t mount any kind of pressure on the Owls goal.

Weaver didn’t have too much work to do but he superbly palmed away an in-swinging free-kick with just two minutes to go.

Full-Time: Carlisle 0-1 Wednesday

  • This is the kind of form needed wot we av shown in last 2 games, clean sheets and a victory.Long may this proceed UP THE OWLS.

  • That’s the Megson effect, two clean sheets and one goal scored in 2 games!! Must admit that it’s way better than losing week in week out though. Glad the back 4 are playing well again.

  • I’m absolutely over the moon about this win, and almost more excited by two clean sheets in a row! This should do a world of good for the lads. WTID!!!

  • dont really know how to take your comment Balli80,the megson affect .. to be fair we were in freefall and hes turned us around . we may have on;ly scored 1 in 2 games but considering we have taken 4points from a posible 6 it isnt exactly a bad thing . UTO

  • great win maybe now some confidence and we can push on did palmer get injured as he came off at half time

  • i haven’t seen either of the last 2 games but is it safe to assume that Hinds has made a difference to the defence? as far as I am concerned that whilst ever it is mathematically possible to reach the playoffs then that is what we should aim for regardless of past performance. we have games in hand on several of the teams above us and if we close the gap then the pressure is on them not us

  • I think if we win are next game which is at home we’ll go on and push for playoffs but can’t see it

  • Hi guys, my first post here. Really pleased with this win – we don’t need to win pretty, we don’t need to absolutely crucify teams in order to push up the table and stage a late push. The clean sheets (away at two decent teams, Bournemouth in particular) are particuarly decent and just what we need. Fair play to Meggo for shoring up the defence and the change in formation. Well played boys, great win. UTO!

  • with 5 home games in march and 3 away ,its going to be a busy month for the lads hope the dont run out of steam with so many games

  • I predicted a narrow win for the owls in the preview post, 1-0 or 2-2, fantastic stuff. I was that confident I put it as an away win on my accumulator although having lost a few quid on the owls over the years I had vowed to never bet on them again!!

  • I see DEZZYP has made a reappearance after his comments labelling our club a bag of s*** and only popped up to have a pop at sussex F*****f back to Bolton you closet Blade

  • Tentown-Owl….what? Bolton? closet blade? when did i label our club a bag of s***? sussex took my comment as light hearted as it was intended, thus the “haha”. iv been on this site a lot longer than you pal and am wednesday through and through. the reason i havent been on for a while is due to people like you and your thick opinions (see above) boring me to tears, retard.

  • Obviously we are not going down. Our next three games are all winnable and if we do win them then theres no reason we can’t have a pop at the play offs.

  • maybe they should count 2-2 as a narrow win especially if you come from behind (if you pardon the pun)! We’ll have 4 more points after drawing with Yeovil and MK Dons. That reminds me, the missus asked if I had been having sex behind her back, I said who did you think it was!

  • DEZZY check your comments in the archives from Friday 4th Feb then come back and lie sorry I mean deny your comments again Everyone else will realise your a bellend we don’t need as a fair weather supporter T****r

  • tentown owl i think you are confusing dezzyp for someone else, hes a good lad and contributes good stuff to the forum. please dont just come on and start spouting your mouth off, fairweather or not we need all the fans we can get.

  • ozzietheowl, cheers for the back up pal. you fail to mention the first thing i said on that post was ‘
Now, i will always turn up to support the team as im sure we all will’ , thats very selective of you isnt it? i said how did i ebd up supporting this ***** when most of my family support man city, Tentown-Owl, are you familiar with the term ‘tongue in cheek’? if you want an argument, make it a good one, not just **** this and **** that, your the one looking like a pleb pal. does having a season ticket for over a decade make me a fair weather supporter? pull your thong out of your arse and get non the blades site if you fancy an argument.

  • Missing the whole point DEZZY you said you never called us a s*** club. No Owl would ever make such a comment no matter how bad things got. After remindinder you suddenly remembered you did say it. It may have been a heat of the moment comment fair enough but don’t deny it and then throw out a smoke screen like your last post. Look forward to cheering the boys this saturday with a Madine hat trick i’m sure you will so long as the shortt term memory loss doesn’t kick in

  • Take ur head for a sxxx tentown, we’ve been a sxxx club for god knows how long, the only good thing about this club has been the fans and it’s only now things are beginning to look good and we now have a bright future!

  • Bit harsh sorry, fans wise we’ve always been a great club, but other than that we havnt we’ve been poorly run and the only thing that’s stood out has been our fans, those golden years we had in the nineties have gone, we should never forget them years, but we are long way from that stature and should look to the future rather than looking at the past!

  • you can’t blame the club for two or three selfish board members think about it WE will always love the club its in your blood Dave Richards feathered his own nest after a job with the FA and got it he got us into stupid debt and remenber the DI Canio / referee incident Richards alienated him Why his own reputation thats why. Alex Ferguson stood by Cantona and they went from strength to strength We went downhill just to protect his image with the FA We suffered and he bailed out. Nice to talk about football again init

  • Tentown-Owl, lets call this the last one eh? but please do tell me and everybody else where i said i didnt say it? pop your glasses on lad, i only asked you where i said it. i didnt lie, deny or claim not to have said i didnt. by all means have a look, its all here in black and white. i dont mind a debate, but not when you have to make stuff up, its a bit desperate. somebody is missing the point here pal, and its certainly not me. just to repeat so you dont dodge the question…..WHERE DID I SAY I DIDNT WRITE IT?

  • Tenmen I mean tentown that’s a bit harsh, but yeah it’s been good to talk football again, INNIT!!!!!! Chav!

  • Have you ever heard of punctuation Tentown? Christ, i’m totally out of breath reading that post! More frustrating than watching the owls! Is that ok? Can I say that?!

  • My mistake, there is one full stop in there! Must’ve been starting to pass out at that point!

  • The Fear, im guessing tenmen let loose a volley of abuse at me? for my curiosty, did he answer my one question i asked?

  • Thanks for the new poll. it is incorrect though. It should say will wednesday get to the play offs NOT can they. Anyone can whilst its still mathmatically possible – so the poll has to read 100% yes at the moment.
