Carlisle United are ‘optimistic’ that tonight’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash with Wednesday at Brunton Park will get the green light, despite the adverse weather conditions.

Snowfall over the weekend and on Monday put the area semi-final clash under threat, especially with temperatures to drop even further as this week progresses.

But with only a light snow shower overnight in Carlisle, United officials are confident that tonight’s match will go ahead.

‘The plan now is to leave the covers in place until this afternoon, and the larger GeoFleece that covers the more susceptible areas of the pitch will be the last thing to come off.

‘We’ve spoken to the referee, Mr Webb, and to the football authorities and they are happy with how things are going. If things stay as they are then there will be no formal pitch inspection and the game will be on as scheduled.

‘The officials will arrive slightly earlier than normal, at around 4.30pm, but we are very optimistic at the moment.’
