Cardiff City have joined Wednesday in the race to sign young Liverpool stopper Scott Carson on a season-long loan for the 2006/2007 season.

Owls boss Paul Sturrock is said to have opened talks with Liverpool gaffer Rafa Benitez over a season-long loan deal for the England under-21 international – but Cardiff boss Dave Jones has also shown interest.

The former Leeds United ‘keeper joined the Owls in March and helped Wednesday achieve Championship safety by losing just one match in the last nine. He made a number of man of the match appearances – most notably in the 3-1 away victory at Wolves.

Carson has already discussed his desire to stay with the Owls – as reported on Vital Sheffield Wednesday back in March.

Carson told the Sun: ‘I’m on a month’s loan and can be called back to Anfield in 24 hours. But if it’s left to me I’d love to stay with Wednesday and help them out of the mire.’

‘It’s very frustrating when you’re not playing in games and I really love it at Hillsborough. Wednesday have put my family and me in a nice flat and I can really see me enjoying myself until the end of the season.’

Carson is currently the third choice ‘keeper at Anfield with Jose Reina currently claiminh the number one jersey, with Jerzy Dudek as back-up. Benetiz has spoken of his desire to see Carson gain some experience in the Championship – and it looks like the Owls will be battling it out with Cardiff to secure a deal.
