Wednesday stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven
matches thanks to an encouraging 1-1 draw at high-flying Burnley at
Turf Moor.

just before half-time after Sam Vokes had given the second-placed
Clarets the lead just minutes before.

The match was Wednesday”s toughest since the turn of the year but the
Owls deserved their point, especially with an improved second-half
showing that could even have seen the visitors snatch it.

Chris Kirkland returned in goal for the Owls while Connor Wickham
returned to the Owls attack, Caolan Lavery, who scored twice in the
6-0 thumping of Leeds last time out in the league, was handed a start
and Oguchi Onyewu made his debut after signing until the end of the
season.

The Lancashire outfit were the only side in the Championship with an
unbeaten home record going into the game but the Owls were in
confident mood thanks to recent results, the latter two seeing them
notch ten goals.

Wednesday had to have a stubborn defence throughout and Glenn Loovens
proved up to the task ten minutes in when he cleared away the hosts”
first real chance of the game which fell to former Owls loan man Keith
Treacy.

The visitors hit back and David Jones made a brilliant last ditch
challenge to deny Kieran Lee from close range after some good build-up
play from an ever-improving Wednesday.

Burnley upped the tempo and should have opened the scoring through
Dean Marney. Marney was put through by the freescoring Danny Ings but
he fired wide of goal to the relief of Owls stopper Kirkland.

Marney made up for his miss just before the break, however, when he
fed Vokes for the opener.

It looked to be sending the hosts into half-time with the advantage
but Wednesday had other ideas and offered an immediate response.

The Owls had a free-kick just before the interval and Wickham whipped
in a superb ball for Maguire to score from close-range and send the
3,000-plus Wednesdayites crazy behind the goal.

Burnley had the better of the first half but Wednesday more than
matched them on the resumption.

That said, the Clarets started the half strongly and carved out a
couple of good chances early on. The best fell to Jones but he saw his
effort superbly cleared off the line by Liam Palmer to keep the Owls
on level terms.

Both sides could have won it and the Owls had claims for a penalty
waved away by the officials, with the referee booking Maguire for
simulation when he went down under a challenge inside the box.

Ings threatened late on when he hit the post with a low effort and
then forced Kirkland into a good save but Wednesday clung on for a
valuable point at the promotion-chasers.
