Wednesday fans could be dealt another crushing kick in the teeth today with the news that star player Chris Brunt has opened talks about a move to rivals West Brom today.

The Baggies have made an offer which matches the Owls’ valuation of the Northern Irish international and Brunt could be set for a move to Tony Mowbray’s men before the end of the week.

‘West Bromich Albion have matched our valuation for Chris Brunt,’ SWFC chief executive Kaven Walker told the official SWFC website.

‘We have always said that if we receive a bid for a player which matches our valuation we will allow them to speak to the respective club. Therefore we have given Chris permission to speak to West Brom.’

The left winger attracted a huge amount of interest from Premiership clubs West Ham, Manchester City and Fulham after his fine form for Wednesday last season, while Everton were also rumoured to be mounting a £3m offer.

And his future was thrown in to further doubt weeks ago when contract talks with the former Middlesbrough player broke down due to wage demands.

Wednesday fans have already voiced their concerns at the team following the crushing 4-1 opening day defeat to Ipswich Town at the weekend and the sale of Brunt is likely to open up more cause for complaint.
