Bruce Wants Rule Change After Weekend’s Championship Action

|

Sheffield Wednesday’s penultimate Championship action last weekend saw us travel to Deepdale to face off against Preston North End.

It was certainly a lively encounter and Preston made us work for the point as we had to battle back from being behind to take a 3-3 draw with goals coming from Barry Bannan, Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu.

After we’d drawn level though, January arrival Dominic Iorfa saw a straight red card for his challenge on Darnell Fisher and although manager Steve Bruce knew he couldn’t really argue with the decision to send him from the pitch, he did question why suspensions ran through to a new season as with Iorfa automatically facing a three game ban, two of those will follow through into the 2018/19 campaign.

Speaking to the Star, he explained.

“The tackle was near me and it looked probably worse than it was. From where I was, I could understand why the referee gave it. I suppose it was reckless. Dom is a strong, athletic boy and I know there was no malice there. The ban should not carry into next season. It is a ridiculous rule that it carries into next season. It should be wiped out.”

Whilst it’s frustrating, I’m not sure I agree with Bruce here, we all know there are certain types of players in the game who may feel that only taking a one game hit instead of three would be considered a bonus at the end of the season and it would just overly complicate things for me.
