“Bring him back”, “Keep him” – Some fans hope Sheff Wed outcast stays this summer

Keiren Westwood will be unsure over his future at Sheffield Wednesday after being dropped by Garry Monk in November and exiled from the first-team for the remainder of the season.

The 35-year-old struggled for consistency and lost his place to Cameron Dawson after making a series of errors, but he’s continued to be overlooked while the 24-year-old has made mistakes too.

Westwood still has one year left on his deal, but it remains to be seen if he’ll want to stay if he’ll be on the periphery under Monk. A lot of supporters from Sheffield Wednesday Fans Forum want the goalkeeper to return, however.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Chris Davies: “No 1 for me. Keep him.”

Liam Hutchinson: “100% our best keeper and one of the best in league. But, for me, wellbeing comes first. Get him in coaching and bring in a proper no. 1.”

Paul Warner: “Not only our best keeper, the best organiser of our defence. Probably the best keeper available in the Championship.”

John Cooper: “Keep him and get rid of (Cameron) Dawson.”

Dennis Oldale: “Keep. No brainer.”

Steve Miller: “Bring him back, Wildsmith as No. 2, get rid of Dawson.”

Derek Prigmore: “No question whatsoever that he’s our best keeper, but he will never play for us again while Monk is at Hillsborough. Dawson has been given a long term contract, so like it or not he is Monk’s No. 1.”

Shane Hynes: “(The way) we have treated Westwood over the last two years sums up Wednesday. We have a history of destroying players and their reputations.”

Ted Fowler: “He would be an ideal No. 2 for a Premier League club, but even they won’t want to shell out £30k a week, so I’m afraid we’re stuck with him. He’s the best keeper we’ve got.”

Adam Lyons: “Best keeper at club by far.”

Stu Wadz: “Teams need leaders; Westwood has that in abundance. He organises, controls, makes decisions and puts faith in the team in front of him. You also can’t buy experience. He’s got it in abundance. Class is permanent.

Danny Morgan Bisatt: “By a country mile our best keeper and has been for years.”

Paul Brown: “Play him (preferred) or sell him. Our best keeper and something hasn’t been right for a while. Can’t pay a player 30k if he’s not going to play. Real shame if he goes though.”

Gemma N Michael Smith: “Dawson has made more mistakes than Westwood, but at £30k a week that could be better spent.”

Westwood joined Wednesday on a free transfer from Sunderland in 2014 and has gone on to make 179 appearances in all competitions, conceding 172 goals and keeping 67 clean sheets.

The Republic of Ireland international was a regular in his first three seasons at Hillsborough but has been short of playing time in the last three years due to numerous injury problems.

Westwood earns £1.56m-a-year/£30k-a-week too, so Wednesday might want him off the wage bill if he isn’t going to play. Time will tell.
