On Wednesday afternoon, Sheffield Wednesday confirmed the news that every fan was hoping to hear – Scottish international midfielder Barry Bannan had penned a new contract at Hillsborough.

The hugely popular and influential 28-year-old was out of contract come next summer but he’s now penned new terms that will see him remain with us until at least the summer of 2021.

Having joined initially from Crystal Palace on a loan deal back in August 2015, he now boasts well over 100 appearances to his name in our shirt with five often worldy strikes.

Having teased the fans on social media, reaction to the eventual news was extremely well welcomed by the fans.

With Bannan himself in his interview with the Official Site lauding the influence of the fans and the relationship he has with them, and saying that he found it difficult to walk away despite the well-publicised problems we have had this summer, he’s only going to have ingratiated himself even more with the fan base.

Even the more cynical amongst the fanbase who don’t believe contracts these days in football mean anything, will have to acknowledge he’s gone from possibly leaving on a free to ensuring we receive money for him and even that isn’t a position he needed to put himself, so come next summer even he does depart his actions show a care for the club given our financial worries and that should be applauded regardless of what now happens.
