Coventry City’s former Owls loanee Leon Best has accused Wednesday midfielder Michael Gray of ‘making sick jokes about Stephen Gately’ following Aron Gunnarsson’s injury.

The Icelandic international was dealt a blow with a suspected broken leg following a late challenge by Wednesday forward Leon Clarke in the Owls’ 2-0 Championship victory on Saturday.

Gunnarsson played no further part in the match following a long stoppage which saw the City medical team treat him on the pitch before being taken off on a stretcher.

And Gray’s reaction to the incident sparked upset in the Sky Blues camp at the time, with Best claiming to the Coventry Telegraph that former Sunderland and Blackburn man Gray made ‘sick jokes about Stephen Gately’ while Gunnarsson was on the floor.

‘Gray tried to get him to get up and then he was making sick jokes about Stephen Gately when the people carrying the stretcher were coming on,’ Best told the Coventry Telegraph.

‘It was pathetic and I wasn’t happy with that and I had to walk away.’

Clarke was booked for his late challenge on the City player in the second half of Wednesday’s victory.

Let’s hope the claims are untrue, with Gray being one of the more exprienced players in the Owls squad, and no doubt one of the leaders both on and off the pitch.
