An understrength Wednesday side was comfortably put to the sword by local rivals Barnsley in a pre-season friendly clash at Oakwell on Tuesday night.

Goals from David Perkins and Jim O’Brien gave the Reds a 2-0 victory in what was a comfortable night against a much-changed Owls side.

There were wholesale changes to the Wednesday side that drew 1-1 against Leeds United at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The Tykes bossed the contest throughout and the loss will give Owls boss Gary Megson plenty to ponder with just ten days to go before the start of the new Football League season.

Barnsley came flying out of the traps and Nathan Doyle and Craig Davies both came close to opening the scoring before Perkins beat Nicky Weaver in the Owls goal on eight minutes to give the hosts the lead.

Wednesday struggled to get into the game and although they showed slight signs of improvement in the second half, the Reds always looked more likely to grab the next goal and they did with ten minutes to go through O’Brien.
