Sheffield Wednesday could be without Liam Palmer for Tuesday night’s meeting with Wigan Athletic, despite the defender returning to training last week. According to Dom Howson of the Sheffield Star, Palmer ‘looks unlikely’ to feature against the Latics while Garry Monk has said he “will assess” him.

The 28-year-old has been out of action since late-December with an ankle injury that he picked up in Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City (December 29, 2019).

Palmer’s ankle problem caused him to miss Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Hull City (January 1, 2020), FA Cup win over Brighton & Hove Albion (January 4) 2-0 win over Leeds United (January 11), 5-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers (January 18) and FA Cup win over Queens Park Rangers (January 24).

The right-back is nearing a return for the Owls, but Monk is downplaying the likelihood of him featuring this week. He said: “We will have a look at this training session whether it is for this game on Tuesday or availability for the weekend.

“He probably needs a full week’s training but I will see. Sometimes needs must. He trained all of the back end of last week and over the weekend. I will assess him after the training session today.” In Palmer’s absence, Monk has used Osaze Urhoghide and Moses Odubajo. Dominic Iorfa can operate in a makeshift role too.

Ahead of Tuesday’s clash with QPR, Wednesday currently sit 10th in the Championship with 42 points from 28 games, having lost four of their last five.
