Two out of the door at S6, and Wednesday fans won’t be surprised or alarmed to learn that those two are Wade Small and Kenny Lunt.

It’s frustrating for Wade.. 74 appearances and 8 goals is a better record than I expected, but surgery in his first season was a sign of things to come, and he fell down the pecking order with Esajas, Johnson and Tudgay more often getting the nod on the wing. Loaned out to Blackpool this term, with Alanis Morrisette styled irony he made the Championship Team of the Week after scoring on debut, but followed that up with a minor hamstring tweak.. it was ever thus.

The majority of Owls fans won’t be at all sorry to see the back of Lunt. There are two sides to every story – here’s the side we know. 40-odd appearances in three years.. he spent time at former club Crewe at the end of 2007/8. Brian Laws allowed him to again go out on loan in September 2008, saying ‘He can’t change his style and that’s not being disrespectful. He can’t get around the park like other players and he’s frozen out of the first team.’

Harsh words, but Lunt’s expressed desire to play backfired on him when he turned down a subsequent loan move.. Laws again: ‘Players make me laugh when they say they just want to play games and when they do get an opportunity to play games, they don’t want to go. It really does infuriate me at times.’

A former graduate of Dario Gradi’s Crewe Academy along with Dean Ashton, Rob Hulse and Danny Murphy, Lunt could have been a contender, but in a Wednesday shirt showed all-too-brief flashes of what he was capable of, and managed to fall out of favour with two managers. His wages will come in handy next season.
