Giles Coke, James O’Connor, Darren Potter and Tommy Miller? Aren’t they all central midfielders? Danny Robinson has his say on Irvine’s tactics…

That was the question that many Owls were asking before and during Saturday’s game with Bournemouth after Alan Irvine’s surprise midfield selection.

With Jermaine Johnson resolving family issues in the U.S, Irvine made the choice to leave Chris Sedgewick and Gary Teale on the bench, leaving Wednesday without a recognised wide midfield player on the pitch.

This sparked anger from many fans as the team seemed to lack width, determination and the guile to break through a well-organised Bournemouth team. Booed of the pitch heading into half-time, Irvine decided that changes were needed.

On came Gary Teale who replaced James O’Connor; Teale slotted in on the left while Coke moved to his favoured central midfield berth.

Neil Mellor also replaced the out-of-sorts Clinton Morrison as the Owls found the width and Mellor caused havoc upfront – Wednesday bossed the second half, with substitutes Teale and Mellor combined for the much needed equaliser courtesy of Mellor’s right foot.

Now many questions will be asked of Irvine’s next team selection.

Will he play Teale from the start?

Will Jermaine Johnson or Marcus Tudgay fill the right midfield position?

Should Mellor and Heffernan form a new-look Owls attack following their impressive displays?

One thing is for sure – Irvine will not stick with the four central midfielders that started on Saturday!
