In-form Wednesday striker Akpo Sodje is a major doubt for Saturday’s vital clash with Coventry City after he limped out of the stalemate with Southampton after half an hour.

Sodje went down after a powerful challenge from a Saints defender and was replaced by Marcus Tudgay after just 28 minutes, forcing Owls boss Brian Laws to tinker with his formation at St Mary’s.

And Laws revealed after the match that Sodje is likely to miss out for the weekend visit of Iain Dowie’s men to Hillsborough.

‘Akpo Sodje also went down early in the game in a heavy challenge and hurt his ankle, which meant we had to change things again,’ he told the official SWFC website.

‘We will have to see what the extent of the damage is but Akpo is likely to be a doubt for Saturday’s game against Coventry.’

Sodje has been in inspirational form for the Owls since his move from Port Vale, netting five goals in six matches prior to the clash with the Saints, which saw him nominated for the Player of the Month award in the Championship.

But it now looks as though Wednesday will have just Marcus Tudgay fit and available as a striker, with Deon Burton also injured, so Wade Small could well feature in the Wednesday attack, while Etienne Esajas is also set for a recall.
