Lucas Joao was sold to Reading last summer, but his move away from Sheffield Wednesday has been contrasting. The 26-year-old has been full of goals and assists for the Royals, but he’s spent the majority of the season out with injury.
Joao has made 18 appearances in all competitions for Reading, scoring five goals and making four assists. The Portuguese international had a slow start to life at the Madejski Stadium, netting just once in his first 10 appearances before injuring his foot in mid-October. He was ruled out for six weeks.
Upon his return to fitness in late-November, Joao found his feet. He scored four goals and made two assists before suffered a hamstring injury in January that would rule him out for three months. The 26-year-old’s last appearance for Reading came in their 2-1 win over Fulham on New Year’s Day.
The season was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic in March, but Joao could be back in time when things resume.
In his four years at Hillsborough, Joao made 127 appearances, scoring 29 goals and making 13 assists. He looks a good fit at Reading, but his injury problems derailed a promising debut campaign.
