20-month goal drought, 1 app in 12 months – Sheff Wed signing 35 y/o was bizarre

Modou Sougou has spent the last 18 months at Mumbia City of the Indian Super League after being released by Sheffield Wednesday. The 35-year-old had a disappointing two-year stint at Hillsborough, scoring just three goals in all competitions and enduring a 20-month drought, but why did the Owls procure his signature?

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

As per Transfermarkt, Sougou has led a nomadic career, playing for AS Dounes, União de Leiria (51 appearances, six goals 11 assists), Vitoria Setubal (30 appearances, one assist), Académica Coimbra (95 appearances, 23 goals), CFR Cluj (55 appearances, 15 goals, 22 assists), Olympique Marseille (16 appearances, one goal) and Evian (59 appearances, seven goals, 10 assists on loan) before coming to England.

Sougou joined Wednesday on a free transfer in 2015 and went on to make 16 appearances across the board, racking up less than 900 minutes of playing time. The Senegalese international made 15 appearances in 2015/16 but featured just once in 2016/17.

He was released at the end of his second season and went a year out of football before returning to the professional game – Sougou didn’t join Mumbia until 2018. The 35-year-old has turned his career around in India, scoring 15 goals and making three assists in 32 games, but he won’t be remembered in Sheffield.

After scoring just one goal in 16 appearances for Marseille and seven in 59 for Evian, it’s surprising Wednesday still went ahead and signed him in 2015. Sougou struggled in France and went on to struggle in England, but at least he didn’t set the Owls back too much money.
