Marco Matias’ career seems to have spiralled since he left Sheffield Wednesday.

The 30-year-old was released at the end of last season and was a free agent for three months before Belenenses SAD came calling, but he’s since struggled for form and playing time and may be released in the coming months.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Matias joined Belenenses on a one-year deal in October 2019 and has gone on to make 18 appearances in all competitions, scoring zero goals and making zero assists.

As per WhoScored, the Portuguese winger has racked up only 513 minutes of Liga NOS football under Pedro Ribeiro, created three chances, made eight successful dribbles (57%), had two shots on target (25%) and whipped in three accurate crosses (20%).

He’s completed 76.5% of his 170 passes, won seven aerial duels (43.7%), blocked eights shots/crosses/passes, made 10 clearances, won 21 free-kicks, given away 12 fouls and averaged a tackle (13) or interception (9) every 23 minutes.

Matias has only started only three of Belenenses’ 24 league games this season, so it’s hard to see him staying at the Estádio do Restelo for another campaign.

The 30-year-old looks a shadow of the player that left Wednesday (72 appearances, 11 goals, seven assists) and is enduring a debut season to forget.

It remains to be seen where Matias will end up should Belenenses release him at the end of his contract, however.
